The power of Font and Typeface

Today I would like to talk about a very useful instrument that any web developer, graphic designer or an editor has in his hand. That instrument is so powerful but often not enough weighted when it comes to finalizing a creative work.  Indeed we sometimes do not even realize it the because it happens to trigger  automatic mechanisms in our brains without us even realizing it.

The instrument I am talking about ant that will be the subject  of this post is the use of “Fonts”. Even if you have a little experience regarding fonts, you may understand really well that the  way in which you convey your message and consequently the type you select for your text is fundamental to pass the right message to the other people.

Since there is not a better explanation than an example, assume you are in the process of  creating a name for an horror movie. Only the idea of an horror movie should  recall in anyone’s mind certain images and sensations connected to fear, thrill and so on. Let’s continue assuming that you find the name of the movie and decide to go for “ The night growling beast “ (scary by the way…). On the other hand, assume that you are also working to find a title for new Disney cartoon and you come out with “The elf of the enchanted forest”. Ok now: compare what you see on the right and on the left and you will realize what I am talking about by yourself.

You can see that the Fonts I selected are somehow applying a “magic trick” in our minds which is even more powerful than the name itself: the font has delivers a clear message regarding the content of the movie we are going to watch. If we look on the left side of the screen, there is nothing strage: our mind is at ease and we see what we expect: The first film is some sort of scary movie, the second title must be some sort of family movie. If we look on the right the situation it is almost inverted and if we did’t know before we may accept that the situation is inverted or at least that there is something weird in the way the title are presented

If you stop and think about it is an amazing think: just modifying the type we managed to make an horror movie a kid cartoon and vice versa!!! I am clearly exaggerating but this simple example opens our eyes on the importance of spending the right amount of time in the selection of our fonts when we are about to write anything.

Nowadays handwriting is no more the principal  mean of expressing our thoughts. In the digital area with computers, notepad and all technological instruments we have always the possibility to choice our fonts while writing, therefore be very attentive in selecting a font that matches the exact meaning of the message you want to deliver!!!

Talking about fonts, nowadays you can find anything you need for your purpose. One of our favorite sources for selecting the right fonts for you is the following website:

https://www.1001fonts.com/

It is a really wonderful site that provides a several libraries of fonts. In 1001 fonts you can find free for personal and even for commercial use, organized for Font categories that most suit your need and your graphic design as shown below.

For each type of font you can have also a preview of the sentence or the name you are working on in order to quickly preview if it is in line with your expectation and the selected fonts really matches with your idea.

As you may have understood, we are real Supporters of this site and we think the creator made a very good job! Among all Fonts we really love we personally suggest “Amantic”: simple, slightly childish, linear but imprecise, Amatic has become, together with Alegreya, one of my favorite fonts. Obviously it doesn’t always lend itself but it adapts well to many different styles.

Created by Vernon Adams in 2011 and distributed under an open license, it is a light and extra tall condensed font. Unfortunately in recent times it has become a bit too popular, which makes it less interesting, but it remains a font that gives lightness and inspires sympathy.

You can find it too at 1001Fonts.com at the following link: https://www.1001fonts.com/search.html?search=amatic+regular&x=0&y=0
